It might not seem like it, but each and every one of us has a stake in how many prime numbers mathematicians can discover, because they’re integral to the encryption processes that lock down our online bank accounts and Apple smartphones. … prime numbers are so important for encryption, the Electronic Frontier Foundation is willing to pay up to $250,000 for a new one.
So that’s all well and good, but what’s it got to do with the law? Well, in 1978, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act was passed in the US which prohibits anyone from subverting copyright-prevention measures, and very specific prime numbers fall under this law when it comes to CDs and DVDs. Trenutno največje znano praštevilo 274,207,281– 1 ima izpisano kar 22 milijonov cifer. Odkrili so ga pred nekaj meseci. (Largest prime number yet discovered has 22 million digits | Science | The Guardian)
